Returning from the war, Fairfax enjoys a passionate reunion with his beloved wife, Lady Anne. However, Anne retains a commitment to the monarchy and believes, along with many in Parliament, that the war has served as a satisfactory lesson to King Charles I. Under the leadership of Speaker of the House, a faction of Parliament secretly agree to return the King to power in exchange for valuable gifts and the promise of favour. Cromwell is outraged: he employs his troops to recover the treasures used for bribery and puts the traitorous MPs on trial. Fairfax learns that Cromwell has no intention of conducting a fair trial and that he has signed the King's death warrant in advance. As the King's execution proceeds, Fairfax and Anne flee London. Once in the company of Royalist acquaintances Fairfax realises he still believes in the principles he fought for, and he must return to London and try to temper Cromwell's extremism. But with the King dead, Cromwell's puritanical regime spirals out of control. His armies spread violence and fear througout the country, with frequent raids on the theatres, gambling dens and public houses. Cromwell is behaving more like an Emperor every day, and tension between the two old friends builds to a point where Fairfax realises Cromwell must be stopped. Robert Scott (Val Kilmer) is a career military officer working for a highly sacretive special operations force. A man hardened by years of brutal service, he is respected by his peers and elders in the world of espionage. This film is based on "Our Sunshine" by Robert Drew, a novel based on the life of Australian bushranger and icon, Ned Kelly. It tells of his life as a bushranger in north-west Victoria, where he lived all his life. He, his brother Dan, and two other men, Steve Hart and Joe Byrne, formed a gang. These four robbed a bank and hijacked an entire town for 3 days. They killed three policemen who were hunting them. They then took over a pub in Glenrowan, where they basically held a party, waiting for a train full of police to derail at a part of the track that they tore up. However a school teacher warned the train, so the gang and all the others in the pub ended up in a shootout with scores of policemen.

The past features the Catholic School where two young boys come of age and begin to have feelings for one another and the influence their teacher has on their lives, priest Father Manolo (played by Daniel Gimenez Cacho). The director Pedro Almodovar weaves the story through the 70s and 80s, and pre and post-Franco Spain. A compelling drama.
