The epic dilogy by Nikita Mikhalkov tells the life story of Col. Sergey Kotov who was unjustly declared an „enemy of the state” during 1930’s. According to the documents he had been executed but miraculously has survived the execution and now serves as a private in a penal battalion. In 1943 Stalin orders Arsentyev to find Kotov. During his investigation he discovers what had happened to Kotov during the first years of WWII.
