Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán (American Spanish: [saˈul ˈalβaɾes]; born 18 July 1990), better known as "Canelo" Álvarez, is a Mexican professional boxer who has held multiple world championships in four weight classes. He has held the WBA (Super), Ring magazine and lineal middleweight titles since 2018, and the unified WBA (Super), WBC and Ring super middleweight titles since December 2020. Previously he held the WBA (Unified), WBC and Ring light middleweight titles between 2011 and 2013; the WBC (twice), IBF, Ring and lineal middleweight titles between 2015 and 2019; the WBO light middleweight title from 2016 to 2017; and the WBO light heavyweight title in 2019. Álvarez is known as an excellent counterpuncher, being able to exploit openings in his opponents' guards while avoiding punches with head and body movement. He is also known as a formidable body puncher. As of November 2020, Álvarez is ranked as the world's best active boxer, pound for pound, by BoxRec, The Ring and Boxing Writers Association of America, and second by the TBRB and ESPN. He is also ranked as the world's best active middleweight by BoxRec, The Ring, TBRB and ESPN, the world's fifth best active super middleweight by The Ring and TBRB, as well as the world's third best active light heavyweight by TBRB and ESPN. Álvarez is ranked as the second greatest Mexican fighter of all time, pound for pound, by BoxRec.
