William John Paul Gallagher (born 21 September 1972) is an English singer and songwriter. He rose to fame as the lead singer of the rock band Oasis and later served as the singer of Beady Eye, before beginning a solo career after the dissolution of both bands. His dress sense, particularly his penchant for Parka jackets, and his abrasive manner have been the subject of commentary in the press; these traits and his distinctive singing style, in which he "twists vowels to the stretching point", have made him one of the most recognisable figures in British music. Gallagher's debut solo album As You Were was released 6 October 2017 and proved to be a critical and commercial success, topping the UK Albums Chart and being certified Platinum. With over 103,000 units sold in its first week, it was the ninth fastest-selling debut of the decade in the UK. In 2018, the album was certified Platinum with sales of over 300,000 units in the UK. His second solo album Why Me? Why Not. topped the UK charts upon its release on 27 September 2019. His tenth chart-topping album (including eight with Oasis), it is the fastest selling vinyl of 2019. The album's lead single "Shockwave" became one of his biggest solo hits, the best selling vinyl single of 2019 in the UK, and his first solo single to top a chart in general after No. 1 one in Scotland.
